In Him Alone!
Proverbs 3:5-8 (The Message) 5-8
Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life!
I had the opportunity this week to listen to a mother who loves Jesus with her entire heart tell me about her child having a terrible disease. This mother went on to ask me for prayer, which I immediately assumed it would be concerning the illness, but it was not. Instead, she wanted prayer for all the hurtful things people had said to her family about her child becoming ill. My heart immediately felt compassion.
When Miranda was little and we were first dealing with illness at a serious level many people said hurtful things to us such as: “If you had enough faith, she would not be sick.” “If you believed in the Word of God and Jesus, she would be healed.”
My Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:13 (Amplified Bible) “If we are faithless [do not believe and are untrue to Him], He remains true (faithful to His Word and His righteous character), for He cannot deny Himself.” (AMP)
Illness in anyone is difficult to deal with or understand. This side of Heaven, we as human beings will never understand everything. However, we have the promises of God that if we lean on Him, trust Him, and run to Him – He will carry us through. God is faithful all the time, even when we do not understand.
I have been blind, deaf, and paralyzed. God did not restore my body because of my faith – many times I did not believe. Micah was diagnosed as a child with a horrible disease which has never touched him even though I doubted God’s ability to keep him safe. Miranda has faced multiple illnesses and again, my personal resolve in God’s ability wavered. Each time, God has taken us through pathways which brought healing and for His purposes. My own faith did not bring the results…simply God did and Him alone! Although I am confident the prayers of others aided us in walking through all the pain.
I believe as humans when we hear the news that someone, especially a child, is ill - we want to understand it. We want to know why because if we can figure it out, then we can avoid it happening to us. Well, life is not fair and bad things happen to good people. There is simply no understanding why…
My advice is easy. When people trust you enough to let you know they are hurting all you need to do is listen. They just want to be heard. I never one time told someone about our situation thinking they would fix it. I just needed to talk without judgments or advice. Praying for God to heal them, and direct their steps is truly the only thing you can do. As simple as it may be, it is the only reaction that can help the hurting person with devastating news.
Silence on your part and keeping your opinion to yourself is wisdom! Trust me – Jesus is all they need!
